How to choose the first AI agent workflow for an SME
A practical selection frame for choosing a narrow, revenue-adjacent workflow before buying or building an agent system.
The safest first AI agent workflow is not the most impressive one. It is the workflow with a visible trigger, repeated volume, clear owner, known exception cases, and a measurable cost when it is delayed.
Start with workflows that already have a human script: lead follow-up, appointment reminders, customer qualification, meeting follow-through, inbox triage, or social content packaging. These have enough structure for an agent to help without pretending to replace judgement.
A good first workflow defines what the agent may decide, what it must ask a human to approve, what data it can access, how the output is measured, and what happens when confidence is low.
